The LiFT (Listening Fitness Trainer) is a corrective audio device used to implement listening fitness Programs. It attaches to an MP3 player (or CDman) and headset with bone conductor and microphone. Air and bone conduction volume are controlled separately. The LiFT is also availabe with air conduction only.
Characteristics of the LiFT
Portable, powered by a rechargable battery pack and user-friendly.
Bone conduction is transmitted to the ear through a sound vibrator on the right mastoid (embedded within the pad of the right headphone). Its main purpose is to provide a "gentle touch" to inform the body that "sound's coming, get ready to listen!"
A gate system operates on air conduction and exercises listening while reinforcing the stimulating effect of the sound. The gate system is an automatic switch which transmits the sound stimulation from one audio channel that induces a state of "non-listening" (listening at rest) to a state of "active listening" (listening at work). The "listening workout" results from the repeated passage of a sound (gating) from one channel to another. The gate in the LiFT operates instantaneously (in real time) and at random, to maintain the effectiveness of the stimulation and to prevent habituation.
Three sets of high pass filters (2, 4 and 8 KHz) allow a gradual step-by-step stimulation of all levels of the auditory spectrum. The specially enriches music of Smart Sounds maximized the effects of the filtered sound.
A balance system operates as a volume attenuator on the left ear. The purpose is to reinforce right ear/left hemisphere dominance to facilitate language integration.
The microphone input function is attached to the headset to exercise the ear-voice feedback loop and develop better awareness and control of the voice. This is a necessary step in ensuring long-term progress and listening self-sufficiency. The microphone work consists of singing, humming, vocalizing, speaking or reading. Pre-recorded exercise programs have been prepared to guide and support voice work. These include Earobics #1 (for adults) and Tricky Sounds (word/phrase repetition exercises for all ages and for English as a Second Language applications).
